Invisalign is a series of clear retainers called aligners. Each aligner in the series moves the patient’s teeth, then holds them in place. The aligner is worn for one week, then the patient moves on to the next aligner.

The Invisalign treatment process starts with scans and creation of a digital model of the patient’s smile. In my practice, I use that digital model to create a treatment plan customized for each patient. In these treatment plans I create a sequence of movements designed to work for that particular patient. Once I am satisfied with the plan I have a set of the Invisalign aligners fabricated that will carry out my plan.

The length of Invisalign treatment varies based on the complexity of each patient’s smile. Many people complete treatment within 12-18 months, though some cases finish sooner and others take longer. Tooth movement depends on alignment goals, bite concerns, and how consistently aligners are worn. Regular checkups allow progress to be monitored and adjustments to be made as needed. Invisalign aligners are removable, which means there are no permanent food restrictions. Patients should take the aligners out before eating or drinking anything other than water. This flexibility allows you to continue enjoying your usual diet. Brushing or rinsing before putting aligners back in helps keep them clean and prevents staining or odor buildup.
For best results, aligners should be worn 20-22 hours each day. Consistent wear allows teeth to move according to the treatment plan. Aligners can be removed for meals, brushing, and flossing, but extended time out can slow progress. Following your dentist’s instructions closely helps keep treatment on schedule.

Depending on your progress, you may be advised to temporarily wear a previous aligner or move ahead to the next set. Skipping aligners without direction can disrupt treatment.
